Rebuilding the City: HR’s Role in Organisational Revival

City HR’s third, and best, annual conference to date, was brimming with prestigious speakers as the theme of HR’s role in organisational revival was discussed. The sessions focused on the fundamental role that HR professionals will have in both growth and governance as the Financial Services Sector emerges from the most turbulent times in our living memory.

The conference was opened by the Rt Hon The Lord Mayor, Alderman Ian Luder, who put the topic into context by examining the City’s role in the Global Markets. He then identified the challenges faced by HR professionals in suffering organisations, ranging from talent management to reward and governance. Our keynote speaker Professor Lynda Gratton, from London Business School, shared her thought provoking ideas on Strategies for Organisational Revival.

Once again City HR delivered an interactive programme with a discussion group surrounding ‘Performance, Accountability and Reward’ followed by break out sessions which allowed delegates to select which session they felt was most relevant to them. Both options explored how HR could help re-build the City, with option one exploring this from an internal perspective (i.e. organisational design, employee led), whilst option two looked at the External Intelligence (Public, Government & Media). Consolidated feedback from the sessions was then presented in the afternoon session so delegates could benefit from the outputs of both discussions.

The afternoon sessions saw the ever-relevant topics of Diversity and Pay and Bonuses analysed in the light of the recession with John Benson, eFinancialCareers providing an excellent overview on how Resources should prepare for the upturn. Stephen Sidebottom concluded the session with a summary of the discussions as well as an update on the City HR Association and the changes being made to the Committee Structure.

The event concluded with a drinks and canapé reception which provided an opportunity for networking and a chance to review the days discussions.
